Celebrating Success: Junior High Boys Thriving in English Homestay on Kumejima

This Christmas and New Year, seven junior high school boys traveled to Kumejima for an English homestay experience. Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the group made the most of their time by engaging in lively English games and practicing speaking and listening skills. Their enthusiasm and high language proficiency made this homestay a memorable success.

High Language Skills and Enthusiasm

Most of the boys came with impressive English skills, holding Eiken certifications at Pre-2 level or higher. This strong foundation allowed them to participate actively in conversations and games designed to improve their fluency. The homestay program focused on practical communication, encouraging the boys to use English in real-life situations rather than just classroom drills.

Two of the boys were returning visitors, with one attending for the second time and another for the tenth. Their repeated participation shows how valuable and enjoyable the program is for students eager to improve their English in a supportive environment.

Engaging Activities Beyond the Classroom

While the weather was not perfect, the group found creative ways to stay engaged. English games became a central part of daily activities, helping the boys practice listening and speaking in a fun, interactive way. These games included role-playing scenarios, vocabulary challenges, and team-based quizzes that fostered both learning and camaraderie.

The homestay also included outdoor activities that connected language learning with nature. Fishing was a highlight, with the group catching an impressive number of fish: 24 on one day and 15 on another. This hands-on experience provided opportunities to learn new vocabulary related to fishing and the environment, making language practice more meaningful.

Building Confidence and Friendships

The homestay created a supportive atmosphere where the boys could build confidence in their English skills. Speaking regularly with host families and peers helped reduce hesitation and encouraged natural conversation. The shared experiences, from games to fishing trips, also helped the boys form friendships that extended beyond language learning.

The program’s success lies in balancing structured learning with enjoyable activities. This approach keeps students motivated and eager to return, as shown by the repeat visitors. It also highlights the importance of immersive environments for language acquisition.

Looking Ahead

This year’s English homestay on Kumejima demonstrated how a well-rounded program can boost language skills while creating lasting memories. The boys’ high proficiency, combined with engaging activities and a welcoming community, made this experience truly special.
