笑顔がいっぱいの7月！ホームステイ前半を振り返って

7月5日から7月25日までの間に、3組の1週間ホームステイを無事に終えることができました。今年の久米島はお天気にも恵まれ、ほとんど毎日思いきり外で遊ぶことができました。唯一やってきた台風も、結果的には思い出のひとつになりました。最初のグループは飛行機が欠航になり、予定より2日長く滞在することになりましたが、沖縄ならではの台風を体験できただけでなく、次のグループとも一緒に過ごす時間ができ、すぐに仲良くなっていました。

今年はリピーターの子どもたちがとても多く、リミと私は「みんな大きくなったね！」と毎回驚いています。以前来てくれた子どもたちが少しずつ成長して戻ってきてくれる姿を見るのは、本当にうれしいものです。その中の一人は、昨年もホームステイに参加してくれた女の子です。そしてその子は、25年前に私が神奈川県藤沢市鵠沼の湘南学園小学校で教えていた生徒さんのお子さんでもあります。親子二世代にわたって子どもたちの成長を見守ることができるなんて、本当に幸せなことだと感じています。でも、少しだけ自分も年を取ったなあと感じます（笑）。

毎日、午前中は海やプールなどでたくさん体を動かし、久米島の夏を思い切り楽しんでいます。そして毎日の昼食と休憩のあとは、英語ゲームや工作などの室内アクティビティを楽しむのがいつもの流れです。また、それぞれのグループが私の久米島での英語教室にも参加し、地元の子どもたちと一緒に英語で交流することができました。初対面とは思えないほど自然に仲良くなっていく子どもたちの姿を見るたびに、「こういう時間を作れて本当に良かったな」と感じています。

そして今週は、私たち家族にもうひとつ素晴らしいニュースがありました。昨年結婚した長男のスカイとお嫁さんから電話があり、「赤ちゃんができました！」といううれしい報告が。リミも私も、もう大喜びです！もうすぐ初めてのおじいちゃん、おばあちゃんになります。ホームステイで子どもたちの成長を見守りながら、自分たちの家族も新しい世代を迎えられることを、とても幸せに感じています。

。これからも久米島で、子どもたちと一緒にたくさんの笑顔と思い出を作っていきたいと思います！

A Wonderful Start to Our 2026 Summer Homestays!

From July 5th through July 25th, we welcomed three one-week homestay groups to Kumejima, and what a fantastic start to the summer it has been! The weather has been incredibly kind to us, allowing us to spend most of our days outdoors. The only interruption was a typhoon during our first homestay. Fortunately, instead of causing problems, it became part of the adventure! The students’ stay was extended by two days because of canceled flights, giving them the chance to experience a real Okinawa typhoon. Even better, they were able to meet the next group when they arrived on schedule, and before long everyone was playing and laughing together like old friends.

One of the things Rimi and I have enjoyed the most this summer is seeing so many returning students. Watching them come back a little older, a little taller, and a little more confident each year is incredibly rewarding. One of those returning students is especially meaningful to me. She first joined our homestay last summer, and she is also the daughter of one of my students from 25 years ago when I was teaching at Shonan Gakuen Elementary School in Kugenuma, Kanagawa. Teaching a second generation of students is something I never imagined would happen, and it is both heartwarming and a little funny—it definitely makes me feel a bit older! Haha.

As always, we have been spending most mornings outdoors, usually in the ocean or pool, taking full advantage of Kumejima’s beautiful summer weather. Then, after lunch and some rest time each day, we usually switch to indoor activities such as English games, crafts, and other fun projects. It has also been wonderful having each homestay group join my weekly English classes with my Kumejima students. Watching everyone interact, make new friends, and encourage one another in English reminds me why we started this program in the first place. I absolutely love seeing these friendships form.

This week also brought some wonderful family news. Our oldest son, Skye, who got married last year, called with some exciting news. He and his wife are expecting their first baby! Rimi and I are absolutely thrilled that we’ll soon become grandparents for the very first time. It feels especially meaningful that while we’re watching so many wonderful children grow through our homestay program, our own family is about to welcome a new generation as well.
