A Wonderful End to This Year’s Kumejima Town English Homestays

今年も最高の思い出に！久米島町英語ホームステイ終了

今年も久米島町が主催する小学生向け英語ホームステイが無事に終了しました。今年は6月に3回、合計12名の子どもたちが、5つの小学校から参加してくれました。

今年は本当に楽しいホームステイになりました。どのグループも初めて会う子どもがいたにもかかわらず、すぐに仲良くなり、とても良い雰囲気で週末を過ごしていました。

ほとんどの子どもたちにとって、はての浜、鍾乳洞探検、そしてパークゴルフは初めての体験でした。私は少し驚きましたが、妻に聞いてみると、「私も子どもの頃は同じだったよ」と話してくれました。妻も、はての浜や鍾乳洞へ初めて行ったのは大人になってからだったそうです。

子どもたちは学校で習っている英語を一生懸命使おうとしていて、「もっと英語が話せるようになりたい！」という気持ちが伝わってきました。

私の願いは、この経験をきっかけに、英語をもっと好きになり、中学生になった時には久米島町が毎年実施しているアメリカでの3週間ホームステイに挑戦してほしいということです。毎年2名が選ばれますが、今年ワシントン州へのホームステイに選ばれた2人は、どちらも私たちの学校の生徒です。7月末に出発する予定で、素晴らしい経験になることを願っています。

さらに今年は、高校生の生徒1名が沖縄県主催のアメリカ・モンタナ州へのホームステイにも選ばれました。彼女は海外へ行った経験がないにもかかわらず、久米島で勉強を続け、英検準1級にも合格しました。努力を続ければ、どこに住んでいても夢を実現できるということを証明してくれたと思います。

今年の夏休みのホームステイは、ありがたいことにほぼ満員となりました。ただ、7月と8月にまだ少しだけ空きがあります。ホームステイに興味のある方は、ぜひお早めにご連絡ください！

最後になりますが、今年も参加してくれた子どもたち、ご家族の皆さま、そして久米島町に心から感謝しています。子どもたちが自信をつけ、新しい友達を作り、英語をもっと好きになっていく姿を見ることは、私たちにとって何よりの喜びです。また来年も、たくさんの笑顔に会えることを楽しみにしています！

We have just wrapped up the final weekend of this year’s Kumejima Town sponsored English homestays, and what a fantastic month it has been!

Every June, Kumejima Town sponsors 12 elementary school students from the island’s five elementary schools to spend a weekend with our family. This year was especially memorable because every group bonded so quickly. Even though some of the children had never met before, they became friends almost immediately and had so much fun together.

For many of the students, it was their very first visit to Hatenohama, their first time exploring a cave, and even their first experience playing park golf. I was honestly surprised by that, but when I mentioned it to my wife, she laughed and said she was exactly the same. She didn’t visit Hatenohama or the caves until she was an adult either. Sometimes we forget that some of the most famous places in our own hometown are places we don’t experience until much later in life.

One of the things that impressed me the most was the students’ attitude toward English. They were eager to use the English they have been learning at school, even if they made mistakes. Their enthusiasm and willingness to communicate made the weekend so much fun.

My hope is that this experience encourages them to keep studying English with confidence. In a few years, when they reach junior high school, I hope many of them will apply for Kumejima Town’s three-week homestay program in the United States. Every year, the town selects two students for this amazing opportunity. I’m especially happy that both of this year’s students selected for the Washington State program are students from our school. They will be leaving at the end of July, and we wish them an unforgettable experience.

We’re also incredibly proud of one of our high school students, who has been selected for an Okinawa Prefecture-sponsored homestay in Montana this summer. Even more impressive, she recently passed the Eiken Pre-1 exam without ever having traveled overseas. She achieved that simply through years of hard work and determination while studying here on Kumejima. It’s a wonderful reminder that where you live doesn’t determine what you can achieve. With effort, persistence, and the right attitude, great opportunities can come your way.

Our summer homestays are now almost completely full, but we still have a few openings in July and August. If you’ve been thinking about joining us this summer, don’t wait too long—we’d love to hear from you!

Finally, I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to all of the students, their families, and Kumejima Town for making this year’s program such a success. Watching these young students grow in confidence, make new friends, and discover a love for English is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.
