Off to College

日曜日に、この冬の英語ホームステイプログラムが無事に終了しました。今回は、高校3年生の生徒さん2名が、4月からの大学・専門学校進学を前に、6日間シサレリ家で過ごしました。お二人とも英検準2級・2級に合格しており、これまで学んできた英語を実際の生活の中で試すには、とても良いタイミングでした。

日常の会話では、私たちの話す内容の約9割をしっかり理解しており、分からないときは素直に聞き返し、自分の言葉で伝えようとする姿がとても印象的でした。英語を話すことを怖がらず、食事中やゲームの時間など、自然な形でたくさんの会話が生まれました。滞在の前半は雨で少し肌寒い日が続きましたが、その分、家の中で英語のカードゲームやボードゲームをたっぷり楽しむことができました。

2日ほど経つと天気も回復し、ビーチへ出かけたり、島内を自転車で回ったりすることもできました。気温は17度前後でも体感温度は25度ほどに感じる日もあり、みんな「泳ぎたい！」という気持ちになりましたが、風が吹くと冷えそうだったため、今回は見送ることにしました。こうした日常の判断や会話も、すべて英語で自然に行われるのがホームステイの魅力です。

On Sunday, we successfully concluded our final winter English homestay of the season. Two third-year high school students stayed with the Ciccarelli family for six days as they prepared to move on to college and technical school this coming April. Both students had passed the Eiken Pre-2 and Level 2 exams, making it an ideal time to put their English into real-life practice.

In daily conversations, they were able to understand about 90 percent of what we discussed. When something was unclear, they asked questions without hesitation and made a real effort to express themselves in their own words. Most importantly, they were not afraid to speak, which led to many natural and enjoyable conversations during meals, games, and everyday activities. The first part of the week was rainy and chilly, giving us plenty of opportunities to stay indoors and enjoy English card games and board games together.

After the first couple of days, the weather improved and we were able to visit the beach and cycle around the island. On some days, the temperature was around 17 degrees Celsius but felt closer to 25. Everyone was tempted to go swimming, but we knew that if the wind picked up, it would quickly feel cold — so we decided to save that for another time. Even these small, everyday decisions became meaningful English communication moments.

We are now accepting applications for our Spring Holiday homestays from March 8 to April 4, as well as Golden Week from May 3 to May 9. These longer breaks are a wonderful opportunity for students to experience English not as a subject, but as part of daily life.
