【久米島ホームステイ】卒業旅行×英語体験｜英検3級でも「英語で伝える力」がぐんと伸びた週末

先週末、福岡から3名の女の子が、2泊3日のホームステイに来てくれました。小学校卒業の記念旅行でもありましたが、3人とも英語をたくさん使いたいという気持ちがとても強く、それがとても印象的でした。英検3級レベルでしたが、驚くほどよく理解し、できるだけ英語で伝えようとする姿勢が本当に素晴らしかったです。

言いたいことがすぐに英語で出てこないと、つい日本語に戻ってしまう子も多い中、この3人は最後まで英語で伝えようと一生懸命でした。また、礼儀正しさや思いやりも素晴らしく、リミと私にとってもとても気持ちの良い時間となりました。ぜひまたシサレリ家に遊びに来てほしいと思っています。

2月の久米島は通常15〜18度ほどですが、この週末は天候にも恵まれ、21度前後の暖かい陽気が続きました。泳ぐには少し肌寒かったものの、はての浜では海に入って歩いたり、洞窟探検、サイクリング、パークゴルフ、観光、犬の散歩、沖縄のおやつ作り、葉っぱを使ったクラフトなど、盛りだくさんの体験をしました。あとで一番楽しかったことを聞くと、「英語のゲーム！」と即答。2階のゲームスペースでは、笑い声が絶えませんでした。

🚲 日本縦断サイクリング・準備メモ

最後にサイクリングの近況です。現在、4月の日本縦断サイクリングに向けて、サイクルジャージの背中のデザインを進めています。また、移住定住島暮らしコンシェルジュと一緒に、旅の途中で配るための名刺も準備中です。今後は、旅の費用や、子どもたちが本島へ大会に行く際の交通費支援にもつながるよう、寄付ページの開設も検討しています。

This past weekend, three girls from Fukuoka joined us for a two-night, three-day homestay. It was a graduation trip, but they were also very eager to practice their English. All three were around Eiken Level 3, yet what truly surprised me was how well they understood and how strongly they wanted to communicate in English as much as possible.

Many students naturally fall back on their native language when they really want to say something quickly or clearly, but these girls made a genuine effort to express themselves in English until the very end. Another wonderful surprise was their excellent manners — they were an absolute pleasure to host, and Rimi and I would love to welcome them back again in the future.

February temperatures in Kumejima are usually between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius, but we were very lucky this weekend with sunny weather and steady temperatures around 21 degrees. It was a bit too cool for swimming, but we visited Hatenohama and enjoyed walking in the water. Over just a few days, we also went cave exploring, cycling, played park golf, went sightseeing, walked our dog, made Okinawan snacks, and created leaf crafts together. When I asked what they enjoyed the most, they immediately answered, “Playing the English games!” We shared so many laughs upstairs in our game area.

🚲 Cycling Across Japan – Preparation Update

As a cycling update, we’re currently designing the back of our cycling jerseys for the upcoming ride across Japan. We’re also working with Island Life Relocation Concierge to create business cards for Jason and me to hand out along the journey. We’re also planning to set up a donation page to support the trip and help cover travel expenses for schools when students travel to the mainland to compete.
