久米島で英語を体験｜高校生ホームビジットと音楽の時間

この1週間も、さまざまな出来事があり、とても充実した日々となりました。京都の高校から2日間にわたりホームビジットがあり、初日は8名、2日目は7名の男子生徒が参加してくれました。皆さんとても礼儀正しく、明るくて、一緒に過ごしていてとても楽しい時間でした。

その中の一人がとても歌が上手で、人前でも全く恥ずかしがらずに歌ってくれたため、自然とミニ・ジャムセッションが始まりました。1人の生徒が私のカホンを演奏し、もう1人が歌うという、楽しくて心温まる時間となりました。言葉だけでなく、音楽を通しても気持ちがつながる瞬間は、ホームステイならではの魅力だと改めて感じました。

また、4月に予定している日本縦断サイクリング（約3,200km）に向けた準備も進めています。今週は自転車でキャンプをし、暗い中でテントを張る練習をしたり、約200kmのロングライドにも挑戦しました。約10時間近く自転車に乗り続ける感覚を確かめることができ、すべて順調で一安心しています。

さらに、12月から始めたウクレレ教室では、先週土曜日に初めての小さな発表会がありました。クラスの仲間と一緒に2曲演奏し、初めての合奏ということもあり少し緊張しましたが、とても楽しい経験でした。次回の演奏は、7月頃に久米島で開催されるハワイアンフェスティバルになる予定で、今からとても楽しみにしています。

日曜日には、リミと二人で時間が取れたので、ホタルドームで行われている楽天イーグルスの春季キャンプを見学してきました。選手たちがとても若く見えて、「自分が年を取ったのかな」と少しだけ感じてしまいました。

This past week was another full and memorable one for us. We welcomed two home visits from a high school in Kyoto — eight boys on the first day and seven on the second. They were all very polite, well-mannered young men and a lot of fun to spend time with.

One student in particular was a very talented singer and wasn’t shy about singing in front of everyone. Before we knew it, we had a small jam session going — one student played my cajón while another sang. Moments like these, where connections are made not just through words but through music, are a special part of the homestay experience.

In preparation for my cycling trip in April, where I will be cycling the length of Japan (approximately 3,200 kilometers), I also spent time training this week. I went cycling and camping, practiced setting up my tent in the dark, and completed a 200-kilometer ride to see what it feels like to be on the bike for nearly ten hours. I’m happy to say that everything went well.

I also started taking ukulele lessons in December, and last Saturday I had my first small performance. I played two songs together with the other members of the ukulele class. I was a bit nervous since it was my first time playing as a group, but it was a lot of fun. Our next performance will likely be at the annual Hawaiian festival held in Kumejima in July, which I’m already looking forward to.

Last Sunday, Rimi and I had a free day and went to watch the Rakuten Eagles practice during their spring training camp at Hotaru Dome. The players looked so young — perhaps that’s because I’m getting older. 😊
