久米島の春、そして日本縦断への挑戦！

久米島では、この春も本当に思い出深いシーズンとなりました！

春休み期間中には、全国各地から3組の1週間ホームステイを受け入れました。それぞれのグループに個性や雰囲気があり、子どもたちにとっても、私自身にとっても、とても楽しく貴重な学びの時間となりました。幸い天気にも恵まれ、海で泳いだり、自然の中で遊んだりしながら、久米島の素晴らしい魅力をたくさん楽しむことができました。

また、学校の教室を飛び出して、自然な形で英語を使えるようになることを目指し、たくさんの英語ゲームやアクティビティも行いました。子どもたちが少しずつ自信を持ち、楽しみながら英語でコミュニケーションを取る姿を見ることができ、とても嬉しかったです。

そして春休み後には、以前から長年の夢だった「日本縦断自転車旅」に挑戦するため、1か月間お休みをいただきました。鹿児島県の佐多岬から北海道の宗谷岬まで、自転車で走破することができました。人生の中でも最高の経験の一つだったと思います。

久米島の皆さまからの応援には本当に感謝しています。旅の途中では、日本各地の美しい景色を見たり、多くの親切な方々と出会ったり、友人のジェイソンと共に悪天候やトラブル、さまざまな困難を乗り越えながら、忘れられない思い出を作ることができました。

この旅を通して、どんな時でも前向きに考えること、柔軟に対応すること、そして予期せぬ困難にも適応していくことの大切さを改めて実感しました。それは自転車旅だけではなく、日常生活にも通じる大切なことだと思います。

久米島に戻った後は、すぐにゴールデンウィークのホームステイも行いました。梅雨入りの影響で海で泳ぐことはできませんでしたが、島内で行われていたさまざまなゴールデンウィークのイベントに参加し、とても楽しい時間を過ごしました。

Spring was an unforgettable season here in Kumejima!

During spring break, we welcomed three different one-week homestays with students from all around Japan. Every group brought its own energy and personality, and each stay became a fun and valuable learning experience for both the kids and for me as a teacher. We were lucky to have beautiful weather during every homestay, so we spent lots of time swimming, exploring the outdoors, and enjoying everything Kumejima has to offer.

Of course, we also played many English games and activities designed to help everyone feel more comfortable using English naturally outside of the classroom. It was wonderful to see the students gradually gain confidence and enjoy communicating in English while simply having fun together.

After spring break, I took a month away from teaching to finally complete a dream I had carried for many years — cycling the length of Japan from Cape Sata in Kagoshima to Cape Soya in Hokkaido. It was truly one of the greatest experiences of my life.

I cannot thank the supporters here in Kumejima enough for all their encouragement. Along the journey I experienced breathtaking scenery, met countless kind people, and shared many unforgettable moments with my friend Jason as we overcame challenges, bad weather, mechanical problems, and many unexpected situations together.

The trip reminded me once again how important it is to always think positively, stay flexible, and adapt when challenges appear unexpectedly. Those lessons apply not only to long cycling adventures, but also to daily life.

After returning to Kumejima, we immediately welcomed another homestay group during Golden Week. Even though the rainy season had already begun and swimming in the ocean was not possible, we still had a fantastic time participating in many local Golden Week activities happening around the island.
