【久米島英語ホームステイ】春休みスタート｜英検3級でも伝わる英語と成長の1週間

3月15日から始まった春休み英語ホームステイの第一週目が終了しました。今回は、鳥取県からの高校生と、愛知県からの小学生の2名が参加してくれました。小学生の生徒さんは今回でなんと11回目の参加となります。

高校生の生徒さんは英検3級レベルながら、リスニング力がとても高く、会話の80〜90％をしっかり理解していました。さらに、「できるだけ日本語を使わない」という目標を自分で決め、最後まで英語で伝えようと努力していた姿がとても印象的でした。一方、小学生の生徒さんはインターナショナルスクールに通っており、英語はほぼネイティブレベル。お互いにとても良い刺激となり、自然な英語でのコミュニケーションがたくさん生まれました。

天候にも恵まれ、SUPを楽しんだり、はての浜で海に入って遊んだりすることができました。また、室内では英語を使ったゲームをたくさん行い、笑いの絶えない時間となりました。こうした「楽しい体験」の中で英語を使うことが、子どもたちの自信につながっていくと感じています。

春休み期間のホームステイはすでに満席となりましたが、ゴールデンウィークにはまだ若干の空きがあります。また、夏休みのご予約も少しずつ埋まってきていますので、ご興味のある方はぜひお早めにお問い合わせください。

最後にサイクリングの近況です。ジェイソンと私は、いよいよ2週間後に日本縦断の旅へ出発します。現在、サイクルジャージや名刺の準備を進めており、この旅を通して出会う方々に久米島の魅力を伝え、島に興味を持っていただけたら嬉しいです。また、今回の旅では学校のスポーツ活動を支援するための募金も予定しています。寄付ページが準備でき次第、改めてご案内させていただきます。

Our first week of spring break English homestay, running from March 15 to March 21, has come to a close. This week, we welcomed two students — a high school student from Tottori Prefecture and an elementary school student from Aichi Prefecture, who was joining us for his 11th stay.

The high school student, although at around Eiken Level 3, had surprisingly strong listening skills and was able to understand 80–90% of our conversations. She also set a personal goal to avoid speaking Japanese with me, and I was very impressed by her determination to communicate in English throughout her stay. The elementary school student attends an international school and has near-native fluency, which created a wonderful balance and provided great inspiration for both students to communicate naturally.

The weather was warm enough for us to bring out the SUP boards and even get our feet wet at Hatenohama Beach. We also spent a lot of time playing games in English, which created a fun and relaxed environment for practicing real-life communication. Experiences like these help build confidence in a very natural way.

The rest of our spring break homestay sessions are now fully booked, but we still have a few openings available for Golden Week. Our summer schedule is also filling up quickly, so we encourage families to reach out early to reserve a spot.
